Building on Phase 2 Knowledge

Phonics instruction aims to help children learn that letters represent the sounds of spoken language — and that there is an organized, logical, and predictable relationship between written letters and spoken sounds. Learning that there are predictable relationships between sounds and letters allows children to apply these relationships to both familiar and unfamiliar words, and to begin to read with fluency. When children understand sound–letter correspondence, they can sound out and read (decode) new words. In essence phonics is the step up to word recognition. Automatic reading of all words – decodable and tricky – is the ultimate goal.

What teaching method is used to teach English

to 4-year-olds?

Enhancing Phonics Fluency

The purpose of this level is to teach 20 letters and move children on from oral blending and segmentation to blending and segmenting with letters. They will progressively be introduced to the letter sets as per the British National Curriculum and will be encouraged to identify beginning sounds and associate them with letters. As they gain confidence, they will learn to completely segment written words.

Developing Reading and Spelling Skills

By the end of the year many children will be able to recognise phase 2 letter combinations (Sets 1-5) and will have explored and manipulated letter shapes through games, tracing, alphabet play dough mats, flashcards. Alongside letter recognition, students will be exposed to rhyming words and will be encouraged to work on some high-frequency tricky words (the, to, go, no).
